Required Training:

Training is composed of four elements.  These elements, described in detail below, are Orientation, Prep Course 1, Prep Course 2, and 3 Focus Workshops.  If training is not completed during Fall UCR TA Training, an additional Make-up Orientation Workshop is required. Training must be completed by the end of Week 10 of a TA's first quarter teaching.  Graduate Division may put a hold on future TA appointments if TA training is not complete.

Orientation: Orientation gives graduate students an overview of job responsibilities, pay, diversity and sexual harassment issues, and an introduction to campus organizations utilized by teaching assistants.  Our focus is on UCR-specific policies and issues.  Time is given for questions and answers.  Orientation is required of TAs in all departments. Orientation is offered every Fall during the first week of quarter. Registration is available on the TADP home page beginning August 1st and ending after Fall Orientation.

Prep Course 1Prep Course 1 is required of all departments except: Chemistry, Creative Writing/Theater, Education, English, Math, and Statistics.

Prep Course 1 covers specific classroom techniques and issues. Topics include: preparation and presentations skills, problem solving, teaching techniques, divsersity training, and campus resource training.  Our focus is to prepare teaching assistants to be effective in the classroom. Prep Course 1 is offered every Fall during the first week of quarter. Registration for Fall Prep Course 1 is available on the TADP home page beginning August 1st and ending after Fall Prep Course 1.

Prep Course 2: Prep Course 2 is required of all departments except: Chemistry, Creative Writing/Theater, Education, English, Math, and Statistics.

Prep Course 2 gives teaching assistants the opportunity to present material and receive feedback on presentation skills.  Prep Course 2 is offered every Fall during the first week of quarter. Registration for Fall Prep Course 2 are available on the TADP home page beginning August 1st and ending after Fall Prep Course 2.

Focus Workshops:  Focus workshops are required of all departments except: Chemistry, Creative Writing/Theater, Education, English, Math, and Statistics.

Three unique workshops, 50 minutes each, are required. Workshops are held throughout the quarter; topics vary.  Teaching assistants are invited to attend workshops that apply to their interests or class situations.  Registration for workshops is recommended, as workshop space is limited.  "Live" Focus Workshops are offered during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. A registration link is available on the TADP home page beginning Monday of the first full week of classes for the current quarter. Online Focus Workshops are available at www.ilearn.ucr.edu, Tools for Teaching Assistants. You must be enrolled in this Blackboard course to access the Online Focus Workshops. Contact us at tadp@ucr.edu if you need to be enrolled.

TA training must be completed by the end of Week 10 of a TA's first quarter teaching in order to maintain TA eligibility.  If TAs are receiving credit from their department for TA training (301 or 302 units), their department may choose to give the TA an incomplete for the units if TA training is not completed within the quarter.  This policy is determined on a department by department basis, and TAs should consult their Graduate Advisor.

If a TA has 2 years of teaching experience or TA experience at another institution, the TA can apply for a waiver.  The waiver will exempt the TA from the Prep Courses and the Workshops; the TA will still need to attend Orientation.
